Warner Bros. Detective Comics (WBDC) or the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?
Who will have the best version of an adapted version of Captain Marvel the superhero? And why is she a woman in one and a man in the other?
Rest assured my dear munchkins, I will explain everything.
Captain Marvel on the left, also known as Shazam in the DC comics is a different character than Captain Marvel of the Marvel Universe, also spelled as Captain Mar-Vell.
The character was created in 1939 by Fawcett, and was later sold to DC comics in 1972 since the author was sued for allegedly copying DC's "Superman". I guess in that case, the world of DC was too big for two solid characters...
Because of the lawsuit against Fawcett and his character, the Marvel Franchise gained the trademark in the late 1960s. Since the name was already used, when Captain Marvel of DC integrated the world of Batman Supermand and others, his name was changed the SHAZAM!
His name, SHAZAM! is an acronym that stands for the immortal elders of mythology (S: Solomon, H: Hercules, A: Atlas, Z: Zeus, A: Achilles and M: Mercury.) All divinity as a special power that runs through Shazam's blood (also known as the young kid Billy Batson.)
As for our fair lady on the side of Marvel, she is a successor of Captain Mar-Vell, an alien Kree that was assigned to follow the development of time travel on Earth. He fell in love with the citizens of Earth; and his people on planet Kree banned him for case of betrayal. He the vowed himself to protect the Earth from any alien or mundane attacks on his new people. It is known later in his timeline that he died of cancer after being exposed to a gaz when fighting eith Nitro. The comic was called The Death of Captain Mar-Vell.
Many replaced him like his son Genis-Vell and daughter Phyla-Vell.
Carol Danvers, US Air Force and NASA officer, had to work on the Mar-Vell to work with him. During an explosion, her DNA and his merged together and she gained his power thus becoming Ms. Marvel. She fought in the Civil War alongside Iron Man, was a member of the X-Men and even joined the Avengers (not in this order).
She claimed the name of Captain Marvel when Moonstone replaced her as Ms. Marvel. (Moonsstone is Dr.Karla Sofen, both an supervillain and anti-heroine).
From different universes and world, SHAZAM! and Captain Marvel are now adapted cinematic versions for the world to see. I already saw Captain Marvel played and portrayed by Brie Larson, can't wait to see SHAZAM! portrayed by the amazing Zachary Levi (Yes, I have a major crush on the man, I mean look at him!)
Onto my next post...
SHAZAM!
